Lahti’s birthday celebration is a day full of events

The city of Lahti will celebrate its birthday on November 1st. The 119-year-old city celebrates with open birthday parties, light art and cultural events.

City-wide birthday celebration at the market square

The 119-year-old city welcomes everyone to the open birthday celebrations in Lahti’s Market Square. There program includes a speech by Mayor Niko Kyynäräinen, an interview with the recipient of the Lahti Medal and the announcement of the Lahti Citizen of the Year.

There will be live music by Village Ten, Dimitri Keiski Duo and Lotila School’s class 6C choir. There will be activities for the whole family, icluding stand-up comedy and fire-art performances, a hobby-horse track and a ringette sports presentation.

Coffee and celebratory pastries will be served to the first 500 guests from 16:30.

Open doors at Lahti museums

Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva, the Lahti History Museum, the Ski Museum and Radio and TV Museum Mastola will open their doors to celebrate the city. More information can be found on the museums’ websites.

Ticket discounts at the Lahti City Theatre

To celebrate the birthday, Lahti City Theatre is offering discounted tickets for the musical  The Black Rider and the plays Thelma & Loviisa and Fedja Uncle, Cat and Dog. Discount code 119LAHTI is valid at the theatre’s online shop and box office. There is a limited number of discount tickets with the promotion code.

Aleksi’s winter lights will be switched on

The traditional winter lights on Aleksanterinkatu will be turned on at 17:00. The story of a winter ski trip has been delighting the people of Lahti since 1983.

Light art at the Lahti City Theatre

Internationally renowned media artist Niko Tiainen, together with students from the Gaudia Fine Arts programme, will create a light art piece using digital technology and artificial intelligence. The piece is part of the KUDOS project, funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the cities of Oulu, Kuopio, Jyväskylä and Lahti. The project is funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU.

The light artwork can be seen on the outside wall of the Lahti Theatre from 16:00 to 22:00 on 1 and 2 November.
