The light art and fireworks will celebrate the beginning of Lahti’s 120th anniversary year

The New Year's celebration kicks off with a public event at the Lahti Stadium. The program includes the much-anticipated fireworks display and a narrative light art installation.

The light installation’s visual design and technical implementation are by Lahti-based Marko Häkkinen of Angle Event Technology, known for large outdoor artworks. Pyroten Oy will execute the fireworks display.

– On New Year’s Eve, Lahti Stadium will transform into a light art stage, where the Northern Lights will dance across the sky. The “Connection III” artwork, which will debut in Lahti, combines new technology with storytelling. The piece will culminate in a music-guided fireworks display that will light up the sky above the stadium, says Marko Häkkinen.

When?

The New Year’s event will take place on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. The sound and light show will start at 6:00 PM. The light show lasts about 10 minutes and will be shown four times before the fireworks begin, allowing those hesitant about fireworks to experience it. The fireworks display will take place at 7:00 PM.

Where?

Lahti Sports Center, Salpausselänkatu 8. The audience will be directed to the main stands and the city-side curve. In clear weather, the fireworks will be visible from afar. Please note that personal fireworks are not allowed at the venue.

Traffic Guidance

The audience is encouraged to arrive on foot or by public transport. The nearest bus stops are located on Jalkarannantie and Hämeenlinnantie. Parking areas at the Sports Center are reserved for the public.

Fireworks in environmentally friendly manner

The fireworks display will be conducted in an environmentally friendly manner. The fireworks do not contain harmful heavy metals or indestructible compounds that would burden the environment. The European Chemicals Registration (REACH) regulation prohibits using substances in fireworks that could harm the environment in combustion residues. The fossil carbon in the fireworks has been replaced with bio-based and renewable charcoal. The carbon dioxide emissions of the display are equivalent to about 60 kilograms of firewood.

The fireworks do not release harmful plastic into the environment. After the display, the organizer will clean up and recycle the waste generated by the fireworks. A small amount of biodegradable cardboard and paper fragments will remain on the ground. The structure of the fireworks and the various limits also include noise and sound pressure levels.
