The aim of the translations is to make our news more accessible to readers who do not speak Finnish and to broaden the international visibility of Lahti. Lahti is home to over 10,000 residents whose native language is not Finnish.
The criteria for selecting news articles for translation include the international relevance of the subject matter and its broad impact on the daily lives of Lahti residents.
– We welcome feedback and suggestions from non-Finnish-speaking residents on topics that would be good to cover in English, says Essi Niemelä, editor of Lahti.fi.
During the fall, the quantity of translated news has multiplied, and the readership on the English site has begun to steadily grow. The majority of Lahti.fi users navigate the site in Finnish.
